The Newest Tech Behind the Leading Construction Businesses

The use of technology in construction has undergone a sea change in recent years. The Covid-19 years produced engineers, construction supervisors, and software developers who could work from a remote position while achieving multiple innovations beyond belief. Where does that leave tech in today’s construction business? Is the excitement of 3D printing, Building Information Modeling, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality slipping sideways as we get back to the reality show we call “work”? Not to worry; it appears that tech continues to be a strong player in the construction industry. Let’s take a look at what the newest tech can do for your business in 2023:

Let’s start with Drones.

Besides being used to figure out who’s having that rowdy party in your neighborhood, drones are the backbone (or spyglass) of the construction industry. They’ve been used in construction for over ten years and the imagery and 3D scans continue to improve. When AI (Artificial Intelligence) jumps onboard, you will see even more of that perfect imagery and pinpoint accuracy. And, good news for you, you’ll be able to see those backyards even more clearly.

GPS. Good for Your Grandmother and Your Construction Business.

Just wait; your turn is coming when you’re of a certain age and the map thing on your dashboard is wrong. GPS is an essential, even if we aren’t entirely sure why. Further, it is constantly being improved in parallel movements, along with the addition of new signals for civil use. Directional and spatial positions have been further improved, as well. GPS tech is a standard for the construction industry and the exacting precision of the tech has never failed us or your grandmother.

Digital twin, Super-sized.

Anyone who has twins can tell you twins are trouble for several years prior to growing up and suddenly making their parents proud. Digital twin technology in the AEC (Architectural, Engineering, Construction) industry, primarily used to simulate the creation of a building prototype, is much the same as those bio twins. During the Covid-19 years, the Digital twin didn’t receive quite as much funding as desired, resulting in behavior issues; however, this digital super-sized twin is now fully equipped to solve operational issues on earth and beyond.

BIM (Building Information Modeling)

BIM is the tech that leading construction businesses are embracing with rapid-fire interest. BIM allows the AEC industry to create models that are exactingly akin to the construction plans under discussion. 3D buildings made from digital models aren’t new; however, they are now created quickly and accurately with pinpoint precision, resulting in fewer errors on the AEC side of the street. Currently, 3D models are made using software; however, that is probably temporary, as innovation pushes modeling further out every day. Case in point, 4D to 7D printing is churning out even more effective buildings. BIM isn’t mandatory for federal government buildings, yet…but it is on the way, if one considers the states that already require it.

If you are thinking about starting a construction business, you might want to stop right here and consider the tech advances made in the past few years. Put the framework of your business together using this construction business plan and you’ll soon be in the middle of 4D to 7D and beyond, while running your own construction business.

Laser scanning

A laser scanner will take a 3D image of an object or a space. It scans and measures with absolute accuracy, making every engineer smile. A laser scanner will also store information regarding each measurement for future use, guaranteeing that no one will lie about using this piece of equipment. Beyond this, some leading construction companies are using laser scanning to send information to BIM to validate construction projects.

Blockchain is here to stay

The digital links that make collections of blocks, aka “data,” form blockchain into a digital system of sorts. The blocks form up into a digital ledger book, not at all like the old green ledger books we used, as this information is stored securely in a digital chain for data collection and use. Blockchain is one link connected to another, block by block; making it highly adaptable and easily manipulated. Blockchain has been used in the AEC industry for more than a decade; I’m guessing it will be around for several decades ahead.

There is a solid reason why the leading construction businesses are leading: they are implementing innovative ways to use tech in every aspect of their construction projects. Why not join them in optimizing tech tools going into the next decade
